Suisen-Kyo Guesthouses

Places to stay with character in and around Kyoto

Welcome to Suisen-Kyo. If you are looking for affordable accommodation with character and style in Kyoto, you’ve come to the right place. Suisenkyo has been featured in the local media, on National TV, and in the ‘Lonely Planet’ guidebook series.

All of our rentals are private single-group rentals with private bath/shower and kitchen. The Kamo house and Shirakawa machiya rental have a wireless internet point as well.

*** Three choices for travelers who want to stay in the Real Kyoto: ***
The Kamo house is a private cottage on the banks of the Kamo River, located 20 minutes from downtown Kyoto city (by bike!), and it comes with two bicycles free of charge. It is perfect for a couple or a family with one or two children. It may be hard to believe you can stay in the middle of a large international city, yet listen to the birds, frogs, and water of the river as you drift off to sleep. Near train, subway, and bus lines.

The Shirakawa machiya townhouse is a centrally located private house, only walking distance from the subway and the Heian Jingu Shrine. Though it is virtually downtown, it is in a quiet and peaceful district near the Shirakawa canal. There are two rooms on the second floor, one Japanese style ‘tatami’ room, and one western style room with a double bed. The first floor has a living room and a kitchen-dining area as well as a bathroom and a small garden.

The Hanase countryside getaway is a traditional renovated farmhouse along the headwaters of the Kami-Katsura River, a peaceful retreat suitable for groups large or small. It is located about 31 km north of Demachiyanagi Station, about 1.5 hours by city bus (930 yen). There are many seasonal highlights, from blooming flowers and cherry trees to deer, salamanders, and wild boar. There’s plenty of snow from January to March as well!

Arigato Gozaimasu!

This is a map of Kyoto from roughly 850 years ago. Kyoto was much smaller then, and the city now stretches far to the North, South, and West.

Shirakawa is located just south of the old Tokaido Road, in the district of the Chion-in temple and Yasaka Shrine.  The Tokaido road was the path people used to take to walk to Tokyo, then called ‘Edo’.

The Kamo house is in the district of Shimogamo Shrine, a World Heritage site and one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
